Istanbul, 28 May 2024

Aleks Metal Refinery, a leading gold refinery in Turkey, aims to achieve a daily production target of 200 kilograms by the end of the year at its newly upgraded, state-of-the-art production facility.

The company plans to contribute 60 tons annually to the national economy. Details about the new facility and its goals were shared at a press conference held in Istanbul.

Sarp Tarhanacı, Chairman of the Board of AMR, announced that the newly upgraded production facility at the Marmara Industrial Site began operations yesterday. He noted that the company is working on integrating artificial intelligence into its production processes through ongoing R&D efforts.

Tarhanacı stated, "Our total investment in the new facility will reach $5 million by the end of the year. We plan to reach a daily production of 200 kilograms and contribute 60 tons to the national economy annually. By year-end, we aim to increase our sales from production to $250 million and enter Turkey's list of top industrial organizations."

He also mentioned that AMR is one of the 13 authorized gold refineries in Turkey. The company is hopeful that it will be among those receiving activity permits once the inspection process is completed. "We will focus on rapid growth and further contributions to our country. We have plans and a roadmap ready for this," he added.

Tarhanacı highlighted that central banks globally hold over $3 trillion in gold reserves and demand 10% of annual gold production. While some of this gold is acquired from international markets, much comes from domestic mining. Many developing countries lack the capacity to process this gold. "Initially, AMR aims to become a preferred refinery for converting raw gold into reserves," he said.

In the second phase, AMR intends to become a strategic partner for central banks in coin gold production and aims to become a significant player in the international market. "This is a serious claim and, if successful, will contribute greatly to our country. Achieving this goal will also make us the largest gold exporter in Turkey," Tarhanacı stated.

Urban Refining Focus

AMR General Manager Ahmet Yılal emphasized the concept of 'urban mining,' which refers to the recovery and recycling of valuable metals from electronic waste such as mobile phones and computers. The company refers to its production process as 'urban refining,' focusing on processing and recovering gold that is stored as savings rather than from raw mining sources.

Yılal highlighted that more than half of the world’s gold is used in jewelry and held as an investment. He added, "We will process not only gold from mining but also gold waiting to be recycled from savings. We will continue urban refining by contributing to the development of a circular economy at our new production facility."

The company is committed to using environmentally friendly and internationally certified materials in its operations, ensuring that only verified and environmentally compliant materials are processed in its refinery.
